Rockies Score Five Runs in the Eighth Inning to Take the Lead

The Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Dodgers opened the MLB season with a high-scoring affair on Thursday night, with the Rockies ultimately winning 9-8 in 11 innings. The Dodgers jumped out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning off Rockies starter Kyle Freeland. However, the Rockies chipped away at the lead, scoring two runs in the third inning and one in the fourth. The Rockies took the lead for the first time in the fifth inning on a two-run home run by C.J. Cron. The Dodgers tied the game in the seventh inning on a solo home run by Mookie Betts, but the Rockies regained the lead in the eighth inning on a two-run double by Ryan McMahon. The Dodgers tied the game again in the ninth inning on a sacrifice fly by Will Smith, but the Rockies won the game in the 11th inning on a walk-off single by Yonathan Daza. Freeland pitched 5.1 innings for the Rockies, allowing five runs on eight hits. Daniel Bard pitched the 11th inning to earn the win. Julio Urias pitched 6.0 innings for the Dodgers, allowing four runs on six hits. Blake Treinen pitched the 11th inning to take the loss. The Rockies will host the Dodgers in the second game of the series on Friday night.
